FISH

‘What is the fish like?’ When someone asks this question, the answer usually is – beautiful or tasty! Which one is true? You decide.

Fish are associated with interesting superstitions. If you catch a fish in your dream the color of which matches the color of the dress you wear, your fortune is going to immerse you in the sea of pleasures!

Do fish have feelings? I don’t know! I have seen them watch me with the same eye it watches its mate or its food or the oxygen pump. If you wish to know the meaning of the word ‘indifference’, don’t look up in a dictionary, look in the eye of any fish.

You would argue – dolphins have feelings. Yes, but scientists say they are mammals.

Fish are one of those genera which have some of the most diverse idiosyncrasies. They come in various shapes, sizes and colors. They comprise – star-like starfish, flower-like anemone, horse-like seahorse, fungus-like puffer fish, jelly-like jellyfish, fluorescent and electric shockers. There are more than 32,000 different kinds of fish known to man; yet scientists say they haven’t discovered even one percent of the oceans yet.

The biggest known fish is Rhincodon typhus – the eerie mouthed whale shark. It can grow up to 40 feet, the size of a medium sized train-coach which could accommodate more than 200 people very easily along with their luggage! It weighs over 35 tons and has more than 3000 teeth. The smallest known fish is Paedocypris progenetica, found in Sumatra oceans and it grows around 10 mm in length.

The acicular-mouthed, leaping sailfish is the fastest known fish. It can swim at a speed of 110 km/hr, double the speed of a horse. The slowest moving fish is the seahorse! A seahorse is a weird fellow. It has a horse-like head and a lizard-like tail. It can change its colors like a white crab spider or an octopus, can move its eyes in different directions simultaneously like a chameleon and swims at a pace of a snail in an upright position befitting a human!

A female sunfish can lay 300 million eggs each year, equal to the population of the U.S.

The blackspot angelfish is a queer customer. The blue angelfish lives with 4-5 yellow female angelfish. When the male dies, one of the females changes into the male and becomes blue in 2 weeks to administer the group. Literally ‘queer’ indeed!

Every year, for the past 100 years, the little town of Yoro, Honduras, has been experiencing an interesting annual event – ‘Iluvia de peces’ or ‘fish rain’, typically occurring in May or June.

Sharks kill 12 people every year, pretty cruel, isn't it? Humans kill more than 10,000 sharks every day. Pretty brave, huh?

  1. Hah nice statistics about fish... and wow, 12 people a year? Comparing that to the 10,000 sharks we people kill... that really puts it all in perspective. Loved the music!
